
The Corporate Legal Counsel for Unilever South Africa is responsible for the Customer Development function, Competition Law and Assistant Company Secretarial function.
Main Accountabilities
Corporate Counsel and Assistant Company Secretary
• Lead responsibility and ownership for all legal matters of the South African business
• Member of the South African Legal team in the African cluster and reports to the Regional General Counsel
• Ensure compliance with relevant corporate governance codes, and local corporate and securities law
• Provide corporate legal advice as and when requested
• Review proposals, documentation and business models for legal risk and propose legal & compliance solutions
• Corporate legal business partner to Comms, ensuring timely and adequate disclosure of
relevant information as and when required
• Corporate legal business partner to Tax, Pensions, Corporate Insurance and Finance
Local Competition Counsel
• Taking the lead to identify and manage competition law risk and providing advice that ensures achievement of Unilever’s objectives
• Advising on local competition law issues which may be of strategic importance to long-term business performance
• Advising the business on anti-trust law issues relevant to doing business, this will especially involve advice on our agreements with the trade, vertical supply chain relationships, R&D development arrangements
• Developing and maintaining policies, guidelines and training programmes on competition law,
• Planning conduct of substantial projects and litigation (and anti-trust inquiries)
• Representing Unilever in furtherance of strategic objectives in trade or industry associations
• Interfacing with external regulators and representing Unilever at external forums
Business Partnering
• Regularly meeting with and advising the Customer Development function on relationships with Customers
• Advising on the implementation of trade terms and pricing
• Identifying legally compliant solutions for achieving business objectives taking into account cost, risk and commercial consequences
• Reviewing and advising on Joint Business Plans
• Training and advising on the application of competition law

Relevant Experience
• Minimum qualification – Law Degree
• +7 years post articles FMCG experience
